why don’t we share it?

June 17, 2011

Couchsurfing hosts don’t actually exist. Yes, they might have colorful photos and interests. A collection of languages and travels. They may even write pretty words, enticing you – an implicit promise that like you, they relish this communal venture, an uncertain but hopeful sharing of space and time with perfect yet willing strangers. But here’s the bone: they won’t write back. Not to the delicate sentences marveling at your remarkably similar tastes. You like this, and that, AND that too? What a small world; why don’t we share it? Crickets.

We went to Pere Marquette for the first time the other week. It was hot, but there was ample shade and a number of lookouts to catch the breeze. The drive was unexpectedly scenic, marred only by the occasional smokestack and oh yeah, that mud-colored river. There were bugs, vines, and an unexpected trail-blocker.
